ACTIVITY 7: THE FANTASTIC BINOMIAL

The main method proposed by Gianni Rodari in his book "Grammar of Fantasy" (1996) is the so-called "fantastic binomial". It consists of choosing two words randomly that already exist and making a connection between them. It is necessary that the possible relation between the words is strange. An idea is to ask a student to write the first word he or she comes up with, and then, ask another student to write a different word. With these words students should write a story. According to Rodari, a story can only be the result of a fantasy binomial.

To do this activity outside the classroom, students can use the random word generator by reducing the number of words to two. The explanation is in the following video, which is the same as for activity 4: https://youtu.be/g4uvdnWm_KM
